Due of sexual misconduct allegations, Melbourne’s principal stood down
After being accused with suspected sexual offenses, the principal of Catholic secondary school Loyola College has been removed from his position.
According to Victoria Institute of Teaching records, Joseph Favrin, who has been the principal of the co-educational Watsonia school in Melbourne’s north-east since 2008, was suspended on an interim basis on Friday.
A Victoria Police spokesperson stated that a 67-year-old Mill Park man has been charged with two charges of sexual activity aimed at a person and one crime of sexual exposure by detectives from the Mernda sexual offences and child abuse squad. The alleged offenses took place in April.
It’s unclear where the alleged wrongdoing occurred.
Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools eastern area general manager Marwin Austerberry announced in a letter to families that Favrin had been suspended by the Victorian Institute of Teaching due to a “personal concern.”
“No staff or students from the college are involved,,” Austerberry told the school community.
“Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools and Loyola College will not be making any further comment regarding the interim suspension.”
Favrin received an Australian Council for Educational Leaders Victoria fellowship in 2020, recognizing her substantial commitment to educational leadership.
On September 13, Favrin is scheduled to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates Court.
